Is your soil too dense or permeable for conventional septic tanks in the Santa Cruz area? If so, you need to learn about the alternative septic systems you can choose from for your wastewater. Remember, a flush is better than a full house!
- Mound System: The main difference between this system and a conventional system is that it has a dosing chamber. The purpose of a dosing chamber is to collect the wastewater and pump it to the raised leaching field at a steady rate. The mound system tends to be more expensive than a conventional tank because there is more equipment necessary. You also have to do some extra work with the dirt and earth. The mound system requires more monitoring as well.
- Pressurized Dosing: When your leach field is backed up, a pressurized dosing system can help. This alternative uses a holding tank and pump to evenly distribute the wastewater to the leach field. The controlled dosing helps improve the performance of the field. Pressurized dosing is cheaper than other systems and can be used in shallow soil and clay. However, it does not do well in soils that hold water well and has to be at least two feet from the saturated soil and groundwater.
- Constructed Wetlands: This is an ecologically friendly option, and the great thing is that it works in almost any soil type. You use rocks or tire chippings to line a manmade shallow pond and put in special plants with roots to treat wastewater. This type of system requires a little gardening on your part in order to keep everything working smoothly.
